Bikers take a stand against rape and abuse

As the need for this project grew, the Epic Foundation was established to better serve the Gauteng community.

Women’s Day (August 9) will see the second annual Bikers Against Rape and Abuse run taking place in support of the Epic Foundation.

The event sees bikers from various clubs setting off from Brakpan to the South of Johannesburg, Midrand and along the R21, with the final destination being the Springs Rugby Club.

Last year’s inaugural event saw over 400 bikes participating in the run and over 1 000 people enjoying the subsequent festivities.

The Gauteng-based Epic Foundation was founded by Alta McMaster at the beginning of 2013.

Having experienced various traumas in her life, Alta has a deep understanding of how lonely and helpless one can feel if no-one reaches out a helping hand.

Her experiences encouraged her to provide that helping hand to others in the form of assisting with the empowerment of trauma survivors.

Alta has been managing projects for rape survivors and others in the Gauteng area since 2011, specifically the Comfort Pack Project (bags containing essential items which are provided to rape and abuse survivors).

She has established a wide network for distributing these bags, ranging from small victim empowerment centres that are linked to the police stations, to larger rape crisis/trauma centres.

As the need for this project grew, the Epic Foundation was established to better serve the Gauteng community.

Bikers will depart at 7am from the Fireplace Roadhouse along Heidelberg Road in Dalpark on August 9.

Families are welcome to join at the Springs Rugby Club from 10am, where there will live music, children’s entertainment, great food and a variety of stalls.
