School celebrates Shakespeare

Curro Helderwyk High School recently held its first Shakespeare Day in honour of the famed English author, poet and playwright.

The fun day was organised by the school’s English department.

School principal Sonja van Aswegen and executive head Mallory du Plooy were the king and queen for the day, while each learner wore Elizabethan era-styled attire.

Grade 12 leaner Keabetswe Masuku played the role of Juliet during Curro Helderwyk School’s Shakespeare Day.

Some learners performed scenes from Shakespeare’s plays including Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and Anthony and Cleopatra, while others recited sonnets.

Curro Helderwyk learner Stephen Heger won the award for best dressed during the school’s Shakespeare Day.

Next year the Afrikaans department will hold an Afrikaans Day and the year thereafter will be the Zulu department’s turn.
