Man confesses to crime, hands himself in

A 25-year-old man was arrested for possession of stolen firearms and ammunition after he handed himself in at the Brakpan Police Station.

According to Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS, the man recently walked into the customer service centre (charge office) at the local station and implored the shift commander to detain him.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect said he committed a crime in the Western Cape,” said van Staad.

The crime in question was a burglary in George, in which three firearms, including a service pistol, household appliances, clothing and other valuables were stolen. The firearm confiscated from the suspect was found to have been one of the firearms stolen during the break-in.

“The suspect also said he would assist us in finding the other firearms, which were sold here,” said van Staad, adding that police recovered the guns in Geluksdal.

The suspect was denied bail when he appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court last week and the case was postponed to March 26.
