Side by side for 60 years

Former Brakpan residents Reynold (82) and Shirley (81) Barber celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on February 1.

Although both from Brakpan, they met while on holiday at the old Seaside Hotel in Durban.

Shirley was the first baby born at the Goller Nursing Home, which is now the Life Dalview Hospital.

Reynold served as chairperson of the Brakpan Round Table and as president of the Rotary Club.

The couple lived in Larrendale and Sonneveld before moving to Bedfordview in 1996.

“My parents had a very interesting life and travelled to many countries and lived in England for a while and then in America for five years,” said the couple’s son, Gavin.

Reynold worked as an industrial chemist, production manager, technical manager, works manager and international sales manager.

On his retirement in 1999, he was invited to start a sales organisation in York, Pennsylvania, USA.

The couple returned to South Africa to retire in 2004 and currently live in a retirement village in Bedfordview.

Shirley’s great love is dealing in collectables such as china silverware, cut glass, ornaments and old jewellery.

She still has a collection as she believes some things are too good to sell.

The couple has two grandchildren.
