A suspect in his early 40s was arrested in Rangeview Street, Dalpark on Wednesday following an incident where a man was robbed of his vehicle and cash in Tsakane.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the owner of a blue Ford Territory SUV was confronted on Wednesday afternoon by an unknown number of assailants who hijacked his vehicle and robbed him of a substantial amount of cash.

“Soon after the incident an off-duty land invasion officer, Muzi Sidu, noticed a man in a blue Ford acting peculiar at the Mall@Carnival,” said Kgasago.

Officer Sidu sought help by calling Chief Supt Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi who heads the EMPD Accident Bureaus.

“On realising that he was being approached by the two officers, the suspect abandoned the hijacked vehicle and fled on foot,” said Kgasago.

He could not outrun the officers and was cornered in an open veld along Rangeview Street, where he was arrested.

The suspect was taken to the Tsakane police station where a case of hijacking a vehicle and armed robbery was registered.

He is facing charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle and armed robbery and will appear in the Tsakane Magistrate’s Court.
