Flowers pay tribute to victims of Anzac home invasion

“He is improving daily and we are praying for his full recovery.”

Friends and community members have placed flowers and candles at the home of Anzac resident Maria Gilda Fernandes – the victim of a senseless crime that claimed her life and left her son fighting for his own.

Known as Gilda, the 64-year-old was shot and killed during a robbery at her Edward Street home during the early hours of Saturday morning, November 18.

Her son Manuel Fernandes (46), called Tony by those who know him, sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

The chemistry professor, who works at the University of the Witwatersrand, is recovering in hospital.

Rose Fernandes, a family friend, told the Herald she visited Tony yesterday (Tuesday) and that he remains in a stable condition.

“He is improving daily and we are praying for his full recovery,” she said.

Gilda’s funeral will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at the Brakpan Catholic Church.

The funeral mass starts at 10am and will be followed by burial at the Brakpan Cemetery.

Providing an update on the investigation, Capt Peet van der Schyff from the Brakpan SAPS, confirmed that one person has been taken in for questioning.

He added that police are awaiting the results of DNA tests.
