Little girl found unsupervised at tavern during EMPD operation

The tavern was also found to be operating with a liquor licence that had expired in 2007.

A special operation targeting drunk driving and unlicensed liquor outlets was conducted by the EMPD Tsakane Precinct last week.

Commencing at 6pm on Wednesday and completed at midnight, the operation yielded six arrests.

Two people were nabbed for drunk driving and four others were arrested at a tavern in KwaThema for possession of nyaope.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, in addition to the arrests, an eight-year-old girl was found unsupervised in a tavern at around 10.30pm.

The tavern was also found to be operating with a liquor licence that had expired in 2007.

“The owner of the tavern couldn’t provide satisfactory answers to questions posed about the girl, which prompted the EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit to intervene,” he said.

“The little girl was taken into the EMPD’s care with the aim of engaging social services to conduct an in-depth investigation into the matter.”

Two drivers were arrested for drunk driving at the intersection of Ndabezitha and Ndaba streets in Tsakane and were detained at the Tsakane Police Station.

The four suspects arrested for possession of nyaope at the tavern in KwaThema were charged at the KwaThema Police Station for possession of illicit substances.

The 52-year-old owner of the unlicensed tavern was given a stern warning to ensure he renews his liquor licence.

“Nine cases of different brands of beer and various ciders, and speakers were seized from the tavern,” added Kgasago.

“The confiscated liquor and the speakers were booked in at the KwaThema Police Station.”
