Detective commended for conviction of serial rapist

Investigating officer was praised by Ekurhuleni Central Cluster SAPS commander.

A serial rapist will spend the rest of his life behind bars thanks to the sterling work of a Brakpan detective.

Capt Samuel Manaka, from the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, was instrumental in the conviction of Tebogo William Mabula (29).

The habitual offender was arrested in 2015 and was sentenced in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday, last week.

Mabula was sentenced as follows:

• Count 1: Murder (Reiger Park, 2012) – 15 years imprisonment.

• Count 4: Escaping from lawful custody (Boksburg, 2012) – Five years imprisonment.

• Counts 5, 6, 7, 10 and 11: Kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances (Lenasia, 2012) – 15 years imprisonment.

• Counts 8 and 9: Rape of a minor child (Orange Farm, 2012) – Life imprisonment.

• Counts 12 and 13: Rape, kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances (Boksburg, 2015) – 15 years imprisonment.

• Counts 14, 16, 17, 19 and 20: Rape, kidnapping and robbery with aggravated circumstances (Reiger Park, 2015) – 15 years imprisonment.

• Count 22: Attempted murder of a minor (Alexandra, 2015 ) – 10 years imprisonment.

He was found not guilty on counts 2, 3 and 21.

These charges included attempted robbery and sexual assault.

The sentences will run concurrently and Mabula was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Investigating officer Manaka was praised by Ekurhuleni Central Cluster SAPS commander Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah for the successful conviction.

“The cluster commander congratulated, appreciated and commended the good efforts and achievements reached by Capt Manaka,” said Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS.
