UPDATE: Brakpan police say no case opened in school gun incident

No warrant of arrest has been issued for the boy's father.

No case has been opened with Brakpan police regarding the incident in which a Dalpark Primary School learner brought a firearm to school.

According to Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for Brakpan SAPS, no case has been opened as the boy’s father hasn’t been found in order to further comment.

Van Staad also told the Herald that no warrant of arrest has been issued for the father and that he is only wanted for questioning.

“There is no warrant because there is no case,” she said.

In addition, Van Staad confirmed that the incident took place on Friday, September 22, and not on Tuesday as initially reported.

“Police were summoned to the school where a seven-year-old boy in Grade Two was found with a firearm – a 9mm Browning pistol,” she said.

“The firearm was confiscated and a designation probation officer interviewed the child and made a report.

“On the report, it stated that the child previously had a feud with another learner and wanted to defend himself.

“He further mentioned that the firearm belonged to his father.”

The Herald has learnt that the child lives in Tsakane and that his 41-year-old father is a taxi driver.
