Man nabbed for impersonating a labour inspector

He was allegedly found in possession of a falsified labour inspector's identification card and numerous forms associated with the job.

A 38-year-old man was recently arrested for impersonating a labour inspector and extorting money in Brakpan.

The man was arrested after a tip-off from a local business.

He was allegedly found in possession of a falsified labour inspector’s identification card and numerous forms associated with the job, including registration forms for compensation and an application for a work permit.

The man is alleged to have visited a local company under the pretext of checking their records and level of compliance.

He reportedly told the owner that the business was not complying with labour legislation and needed to pay R40 000, otherwise he would close the company.

The firm called the Brakpan Labour Centre to verify and confirm the legitimacy of the labour inspector and whether he was employed by the department.

He was swiftly arrested and charged with extortion and impersonating a labour inspector.

The Gauteng Department of Labour has commended the response by Brakpan police which led to the arrest of the man.

It also encourages other employers and the general public to report any bogus activity to the provincial office in Braamfontein and alert local labour centres of any similar incidents.

The office can be contacted on 011 853 0300.
