Carnival City gets planting

"We are delighted with our new trees and hope that we have encouraged our employees and guests to get planting too.”

To mark the start of spring and Arbor Month, representatives from Carnival City rolled up their sleeves and got digging to plant 10 buffalo thorn trees around the casino complex.

A further 90 trees were handed to guests visiting the complex on Spring Day.

Arbor Month serves to generate awareness of the devastating effects of deforestation and urbanisation on the environment, with the aim to encourage South Africans to do their bit to help replenish what has been lost by planting more indigenous trees.

Arbor Day, a celebration of the beauty and importance of trees, was initiated in Nebraska way back in 1872.

South Africans adopted the concept in 1983 and it has since evolved into a month-long awareness campaign that has the creation of a greener future at its core.

“As with so many things, one person planting one tree will make little difference,” said Annemie Turk, general manager at Carnival City.

“However, if we all band together and plant trees in Arbor Month, the cumulative effect is meaningful.

“Tree planting has been a tradition at Carnival City for many years.

“We are delighted with our new trees and hope that we have encouraged our employees and guests to get planting too.”
