Weekend crime round-up

According to information received, the following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend:

• Friday – A motorist was robbed by two men, near Carnival City.

The victim pulled over to rest at the corner of Elsburg Road and Heidelberg Road (R23), at around 2am, when a tow truck with flashing blue lights stopped alongside him.

Two men wearing Metro Police jackets alighted the truck and approached the driver.

After checking his licence, the men accused the victim of being drunk.

They searched his vehicle and helped themselves to his cellphone, a large sum of cash and a toolbox.

They then returned to the truck and drove off.

* A white Toyota Tazz was stolen from Derby Avenue.

* A lone thief stole a cellphone from a female passenger in a car at the corner of Voortrekker Road and Station Road.

The car was stationary at the intersection when the man reached in through an open window and grabbed the phone from the victim’s hand.

The incident took place at around 2.30pm.

* A Big Boy scooter (colour and model not provided) was stolen from an address along Springs Road, in Denneoord.

* A female commuter was robbed in a taxi.

Shortly after boarding the taxi at about 8pm, at the corner of Voortrekker Road and Wanderers Street, one of the other passengers demanded the woman’s cellphone and pointed a gun at her.

The victim was also robbed of her groceries and was dropped off in Slovo Park, Springs.

* A battery was stolen from a car parked along Tiller Road, in Dalpark Extension One.

• Saturday – A TV and a DVD player were stolen from a home along Bakkes Street, in Brenthurst.

* A man was assaulted and robbed at a bar along Prince George Avenue at around 1am.

One of the robbers is known to the victim.

He approached the victim earlier that evening and asked him to buy him a drink.

The victim refused and the man left.

He returned a short while later, accompanied by another man, and punched the victim in the face.

The man continued to assault the victim until he fell down.

The pair searched the victim, taking cash from his pocket, and ran off.

• Sunday – A business situated along Kingsway Street was broken into.

A suspect was caught on the premises in possession of taps and drain pipes taken from the building.

He was arrested.

Other cases:

• Thursday – A TV and an amplifier were stolen from a home along Recreation Way, in Anzac.

* A break-in was reported at an address along Crest Street, in Sunair Park, but nothing was stolen.

* Cash was withdrawn from a man’s bank account after he accepted help from a stranger at an ATM in the CBD.

At around 11am, the victim tried to insert his card at an ATM along Prince George Avenue, but the machine rejected it.

He was able to complete the transaction after accepting help from a man.

About an hour later, the man received SMS notifications from his bank alerting him that R3000 had been withdrawn from his account and R1000 had been spent at a local bottle store.

* A spare wheel was stolen from a vehicle parked along Springs Road, in Vulcania.

• Speeding: 8
• Common robbery: 1
• Possession of drugs: 1
• Drunk driving: 3
• Business burglary: 1
• Theft: 1
• Malicious damage to property: 1
