Support bikers in creating awareness about rape

All bikers are invited to be a part of this initiative and the general public can also show support by donating items for the comfort packs.

Bikers from across Gauteng will create 170km of awareness about rape and abuse on Women’s Day, August 9, in a first-of-its-kind awareness run.

There are various starting points for this awareness run, including on the East Rand, from The Fireplace Roadhouse, in Brakpan, at 7am. All bikers will congregate at The Zone, on the corner of Cason and Turf roads, in Boksburg, by 11am.

Organiser Eugene van Straten, a member of the East Rand Guardian Angels, explained that this awareness run is being held under the auspices of the Adullam Biker Ecclesia, a bikers’ church group based in Boksburg.

He says it is the first time a biker awareness run focused on rape is taking place in South Africa.

“There have been many awareness runs focused on abuse, but this is the first time rape is a focus.

“This awareness run is in support of the Epic Foundation, an organisation focused on projects and initiatives to support victims of rape and abuse.

“The founder, Alta McMaster, does phenomenal work and we are honoured to be doing this run in support of her foundation. We aim to do this run annually on Women’s Day,” said van Straten.

One of the main projects carried out by the Epic Foundation is comfort packs for rape victims. Donations of items for these packs also form part of the biker awareness day.

“There will be collection bins at each starting point for bikers and at our destination point, in Boksburg,” said Van Straten.

All bikers are invited to be a part of this initiative and the general public can also show support by donating items for the comfort packs.

There will be fun for the whole family at The Zone, including jumping castles, food and craft stalls and live entertainment.

Any of the following items can be donated for the rape victim comfort packs: shampoo, face cloth, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, pocket tissues, soap, lip balm and comb or hairbrush.
