War on weeds takes time

It may take up to a year to bring the Brakpan Dam's hyacinth problem fully under control.

This is the official word from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

It was reported in last week’s Herald, ‘Dam sees light of day’ how the water surface recently became visible after being completed covered by the invasive weed for months.

“Indeed, there has been significant progress in the removal of hyacinth from the Brakpan Dam, however, looking at the extent of the problem and how hyacinth proliferates, it may take several months (six to 12) to keep it under control,” said metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

“It all depends on the level of pollution, particularly sewage, breakdowns of the Watermaster, as well as temperatures.

“All these factors play a role in the rate at which the work can be completed.

“The municipality will continue to have interventions at the dam until the hyacinth cover is kept at a manageable level.”
