Vehicle theft victims beware: Police warn of new scam

Victims are urged to contact police immediately.

Police in Brakpan and other precincts within the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster SAPS have identified that vehicle theft victims are being contacted by fraudsters who pretend to be police officials claiming to have recovered their stolen vehicles.

The fraudsters make an appointment with the victims to meet at the local police station and later call again and request the victims to deposit money so that they can tow the vehicle to them.

“It is the responsibility of the police to tow the recovered stolen vehicle from the scene to the pound and under no circumstances will the victim be asked to pay money for towing the vehicle,” said Lieut-Col Mack Mngomezulu from the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster SAPS.

“The victim will be asked to avail the vehicle’s legitimate documents and to identify the vehicle, and a statement will be taken.”

Once the investigation is concluded, the investigating officer will lawfully hand over the vehicle to the owner without any financial payments or deposit request.

Victims of this scam are urged to immediately contact police or the investigating officer assigned to their case.

The Brakpan SAPS can be contacted on 011 744 4940.
