What a mouthful: Mall@Carnival makes thousands of sandwiches for Mandela Day

In aid of Meals on Wheels.

Mall@Carnival’s Spreading the Love campaign saw 89 volunteers making as many sandwiches as they could in 67 minutes, yesterday (Tuesday).

The campaign, now in its second year, was in honour of Nelson Mandela International Day and in aid of Meals on Wheels.

Mandela Day is commemorated annually on July 18 – Mandela’s birthday – and the significance of 67 minutes refers to every year of his life spent in public service, between 1942 and 2009, when the Nelson Mandela Foundation first introduced Mandela Day.

Meals on Wheels is a multi-faceted welfare service aimed at helping the elderly to live out their sunset years in dignity and relative comfort.

The service includes old age homes, frail care centres, service centres for senior citizens and the well known Meals on Wheels For The Aged meal delivery service.

Meals on Wheels Community Services also includes crèches and soup kitchens and/or feeding schemes.

Shiley McPherson, marketing co-ordinator for Mall@Carnival, told the Herald that 3 616 sandwiches were made during the 67 minutes.

Four hundred slices of cheese, 16 containers of chicken mayonnaise filling, 32 tubs of margarine, 103 jars of peanut butter, 15kg of jam and 412 loaves of bread were used.
