The Benoni Fire Station has been damaged by protesters.

According to William Ntladi,  media liaison officer for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), at around 8.15am this morning (Monday), members of the community marching along Harpur Road and Liverpool Street, damaged the station, bringing its operations to a standstill.

“Stones and a various assortment of objects were used to break newly revamped machine bay doors and office windows,” said Ntladi.

“As per information at hand, the marchers were en route from Actonville to the Customer Care Centre in the CBD.

“The extent of damage is still undetermined, however, emergency operations have been suspended till the situation is normalised.”

Plans have been put in place in case of any eventualities that might arise around the operational jurisdiction.

“The surrounding fire brigade services at Brakpan, Farrarmere and Boksburg have been put in place for swift interventions,” said Ntladi.
