Plastic City shooting leaves two dead

Police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.

A shooting at the Plastic City informal settlement last night (Tuesday) claimed the lives of a teenager and a young man.

Another male (age unknown) sustained minor injuries during the incident, which took place sometime before 7pm.

Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS, told the Herald the three victims are Mozambican nationals.

“Two victims, aged 17 and 21, were busy in their shack melting gold dust when two unknown males entered and pointed a firearm at them, demanding money and gold,” she said.

“The victims didn’t respond and an argument ensued.

“A witness heard two shots being fired and the suspects ran out of the shack.

“The suspects saw the witness and he was also shot at and wounded in the right upper thigh.

“The suspects then ran away.”

According to ER24 spokesperson Ineke van Huyssteen, when paramedics arrived on the scene they found one victim lying next to the road and another inside his home.

The injured witness was transported to the Far East Rand Hospital.

“Police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder,” said Van Staad, adding that the suspects are still at large.
