Phillip de Lange takes up DA leadership in Ekurhuleni

Statement by new DA leader in Ekurhuleni, Clr Phillip de Lange:

I am humbled and ready to serve the residents of Ekurhuleni as we continue to strive for meaningful change in the lives of our people throughout our metro.

Accepting the position of leader in the DA Ekurhuleni caucus is one I did not accept lightly.

While I realise I have big shoes to fill since Clr Cachalia’s call up to parliament, I believe through his values and those of the DA, we can continue to hold the ANC-led coalition to account.

For too long we have watched the ANC dilute the values of our people with corruption and empty promises.

Time and time again, the ANC have tried to divide us on racial grounds instead of building unity and the hope of a prosperous future.

My political background spans many decades with one distinctive goal throughout; to serve our people.

The statistics speak for themselves: increased unemployment, 119 informal settlements and counting, as well as one of the highest poverty rates in the country.

The ANC-led coalition is failing our people.

A metro of this stature should be a beacon of hope. One of opportunities, one of future prospects for our youth.

Instead, youth unemployment is escalating, and our young adults are turning to drugs.

I, along with my party, have heeded the call of the people of Ekurhuleni.

We promise to hold the ANC and its coalition partners to account.

I promise to have active engagement with our citizens to hear their plight.

I promise that we will keep hope alive.

The time has come to find our hope once more.
