Chris Hani’s legacy lives on

April is Chris Hani month.

This year marks the 24th anniversary since the murder of  fearless freedom fighter, Chris Hani.

To pay tribute to the anti-apartheid leader, the City of Ekurhuleni will continue to roll out programmes which reveal the ideals for which Hani stood.

These include the provision of decent housing, primary health care and the alleviation of hunger.

In ensuring that these principles do not die, the City of Ekurhuleni conferred the Freedom of the City to Chris Hani in November 2006, and declared April as Chris Hani Month.

To kick-start the celebrations, the city will today (Monday) convene a wreath-laying ceremony to be attended by a senior delegation of political leaders and the Hani family at the Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park, in Boksburg.

This will be followed by a memorial lecture on Hani at the Boksburg Civic Centre.

The Chris Hani Photographic Exhibition, depicting the life of Hani, will be opened for public viewing for free, from today until April 30, every day from 9am to 4.30pm, and from 8am to noon on weekends at Hani’s former home in Dawn Park, Boksburg.

Some of the events to commemorate the life of Hani includes:

  • Mayoral Diski Challenge Soccer Tournament for amateur football clubs from around Ekurhuleni from April 14 to 16 at Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton.
  • School debates on living the legacy of Chris Hani on April 21 and 22 at Dawn Park Primary School.
  • Poetry slam competition on Saturday, April 29, at the Boksburg Auditorium.
