Protests erupted on the streets of Tsakane on Monday morning, and later spread to Geluksdal and KwaThema.
The unrest started during the early hours of the morning when a crowd of about 500 community members blocked streets in Langaville with stones, bricks and burning tyres, in protest against the disconnection of illegal electricity connections.
At about 10am, the protest flared up in Geluksdal, and 12th, Vlakfontein and Black roads were blocked.
The protest spread to KwaThema at about 3pm.
Police report there were attempts to loot foreign owned businesses and there was also an attempt to loot a supermarket in Tsakane.
These attempts failed due to police presence.
Protesters also threatened to attack municipal councillors.
The EMPD and SAPS guarded council and business properties.
