Brakpan loses to Blue Bulls champs

“Unfortunately, we had to play against them without nine regular first team players.”

Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV are in full preparation mode for the 2017 Valke Peregrine League campaign.

The “Panne” played a warm-up match against Blue Bulls champion club Quins Bobbies Rugby (QBR) at the Bosman Stadium on Saturday, March 25.

Led by lock forward Dean van der Merwe, the team went down 26-23 to the Pretoria-based side.

“Unfortunately, we had to play against them without nine regular first team players due to sickness or non-availability,” said Brakpan Rugby Club chairman Harry Nieuwenhuis.

“The youngsters who got their chances did extremely well and nearly got the better of one of the top clubs in South Africa.

“The closeness of the end result actually forced QBR to invite us back to Pretoria on Saturday, April 8 for a rematch.”

This weekend the Panne will play Kempton Park at Barnard Stadium.

Try-scorers on Saturday were young winger Danie Botha (two tries) and Raymond Herron.

Centre Gido Horn scored the remainder of the points with the boot.

The defending Valke Peregrine League champions will get their league campaign underway on Saturday, May 6, away against Boksburg Rugby Club.

The team which wins the league will represent the Valke Rugby Union in the South African Rugby Union’s (Saru) prestigious Gold Cup in September.

Brakpan’s team versus QBR: Tommie Damba, Juan Botha, Jannes Veldsman, Gido Horn, Danie Botha, Hagan Mumba, Thabo Tau, Wikus van der Berg, Theo Becker, Raymond Herron, Dean van der Merwe (captain), Duncan Botha, Armand Jordaan, Punda van Loggenberg, Henrico van Eck. Reserves: Mdoda Dlamini, Michael Raper, Dalton Botha, Wesley Nortier, Jean van Vuuren, Darren Lindsay and Gina Figoli.
