Five arrests linked to cars stolen in Cape Town and KZN

“Both the panel beater and the person who claimed to be the owner of the Mercedes were taken in after it emerged, during preliminary investigations, that the vehicle was being sought by law enforcement agencies for having been used in several criminal activities.”

A black Mercedes Benz SUV, reportedly stolen on Sunday, in Cape Town, was tracked down to a panel beater in Brakpan.

The stolen SUV was recovered on Monday, at around 3pm, by Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Community Liaison Unit members and Rentrak vehicle tracking officers.

Two male suspects were taken in for questioning at the Brakpan Police Station.

“The Mercedes Benz was found with damage to its front and rear, as well as a broken rear windscreen,” said EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago.

“Both the panel beater and the person who claimed to be the owner of the Mercedes were taken in after it emerged, during preliminary investigations, that the vehicle was being sought by law enforcement agencies for having been used in several criminal activities.”

On being ordered to produce papers for the vehicle, the person who claimed to have bought it in Parow failed to do so.

The vehicle was towed to the SAPS Van Ryn Deep Pound in Benoni for further investigations.

“In-depth investigations and questioning of the two suspects are underway to get to the bottom of the matter,” said Kgasago.

In a separate incident, on Monday, EMPD Equestrian Unit members and Rentrack officers recovered a bakkie in Tsakane that was stolen during a hijacking in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday, March 10.

“The hijacked white Toyota Raider was found in Lillian Ngoyi Street, in Extension Eight, in a yard where three men were washing the vehicle,” said Kgasago.

“All three men were arrested and detained at the Tsakane Police Station on charges of being in possession of a stolen vehicle.”
