Metro to use machine to weed out hyacinth

"Should improve the situation."

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has responded to the Herald’s request for comment about the hyacinth problem at the Brakpan Dam.

According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the Environmental Resources Management Department shares the concerns regarding the hyacinth proliferation at the dam.

“The dam has been sprayed a few times to arrest the situation,” he said.

“However, the recent rains have disrupted the spraying schedule and hence the situation has not improved as planned.

“We will now deploy the Watermaster at the Brakpan Dam in the next few weeks.

“This together with the occasional herbicide spraying should improve the situation.”

The Watermaster machine is capable of doing suction dredging, backhoe dredging, raking and piling.
