Sign up as a police reservist
Would-be police reservists must meet following criteria.
The SAPS invites members of the community who are energetic, intelligent, physically and mentally fit – and who have the desire to serve the country on a voluntary basis, to assist in the fight against crime and sign up as reservists.
A reservist performs voluntary duty in the SAPS without any compensation.
The core functions are:
• perform general functional policing duties in sectors at station level.
• prevent, combat and investigate crime.
• maintain public order.
• protect and secure the inhabitants of the Republic and their property.
• uphold and enforce the law.
Reservists are expected to perform a minimum of 16 hours of voluntary duty per month.
The basic appointment requirements are:
• is a South African citizen by birth.
• at least 20 years old and below 50 years of age, of which documentary proof is required.
• completes a health questionnaire determined by the National Commissioner, at his or her own cost; that is confirmed by a registered medical practitioner.
• is medically, mentally and physically fit to perform the duties of a reservist.
• is of good and sound character, for which positive background enquiries must be obtained.
• fits the psychometric profile and has successfully completed any other tests, that may be determined by the National Commissioner.
• is in possession of at least a senior certificate (Grade 12) or has successfully completed a SAQA accredited NQF level four qualification, of which documentary proof must be provided.
• is able to speak, read and write at least two official languages, of which one must be English.
• allows his or her fingerprints and DNA sample to be taken; completes an assessment questionnaire and is vetted or screened.
• is prepared to undergo such training as may be determined by the National Commissioner.
• is prepared to take the oath of office.
• understands that his or her services may be terminated at the age of 60.
• applicants who are employed, will received preference (must provide proof of employment).
• provides proof of his or her residential address.
• does not have a criminal record or any criminal or departmental cases pending against him or her (all criminal or departmental cases must be declared).
• does not have any tattoo marks, which are visible if the person wears uniform – and that is irreconcilable with the objectives of the service.
Applications close on Thursday, November 24.
Selected candidates will be invited to attend a reservist training programme and the appointment as a reservist, will only be effected upon the successful completion of the prescribed training.
