Shoppers warned to be vigilant

Capt Peet van der Schyff, from the Brakpan SAPS, urged female shoppers, especially the elderly, not to accept help from strangers.

Brakpan police have warned residents to be vigilant when shopping following the theft of a woman’s handbag and groceries at Mall@Carnival.

According to information received from the local SAPS, the woman was exiting the mall at about 2pm on Friday, last week, when she was approached by a woman who asked to push her trolley.

The victim agreed and the two were walking along, when a second woman appeared and engaged in a conversation with the victim.

A third woman then grabbed the victim’s handbag.

While searching for the handbag thief and her accomplice, the victim realised the woman pushing her trolley had also disappeared.

The value of the stolen items is approximately R1 000.

Capt Peet van der Schyff, from the Brakpan SAPS, urged female shoppers, especially the elderly, not to accept help from strangers.

“Shoppers are also advised to never leave their bags or other valuables, such as cellphones or purses, unattended in a shopping trolley or basket,” he added.
