Support Shozoloza Village Fun Day

It is home to over 60 indigent people

A fun day in aid of Shozoloza Village will take place on Saturday, October 29.

Shozoloza Village, as the residents have named it, is situated at 2 Hansen Street in Geluksdal.

It was previously called Die Herberg.

It is home to over 60 indigent people, some of whom are employed while others receive government grants.

Their income, however, is very low and they battle to survive.

Most have no family support.

The accommodation is low cost with communal bathrooms, as the houses don’t have running water.

“We have supported them with food parcels, money or transport when someone is desperate to see a doctor or to go for job interviews,” said Charmaine Erlank, a volunteer who helps the residents of the communal living area.

“We also deliver second-hand clothing, which they use or try sell to collect money for basic foodstuffs.

“We are currently revamping and working on a community centre for the residents.

“This will include a library, workstations and a homework station with a computer and printer for the school children.

“We are also in the process of installing free-standing veggie gardens with potatoes and tomatoes.

“We did revamp some of the homes in July, to try uplift spirits, and this worked so well that the residents are now so motivated to help themselves.”

The fun day will see the residents doing something for the day to empower themselves a little.

It will be held at Shozoloza Village from 10am to 5pm.

There will be entertainment, food and craft stalls, games for children and a jumping castle.

The entrance fee is a tin or item of non-perishable food.

Erlank can be contacted on 087 940 9617 for more information.
