Tell us what you think of #FeesMustFall

• Rhodes University emailed all its students on Sunday advising them that continued disruptions would lead to all students being sent home.

This was the message they mailed out:

“Continued instability will destroy our higher education system.

“If normal activities cannot continue next week, the University will be left with no option but to close and send all students home.

“The closure of the University will have dire consequences for the all University staff, and for students themselves who will not be able to complete the academic year.

“Think hard about your actions!”

We would like to hear from Springs readers how this is directly affecting you and your parents or children.

Do students have any clarity from their universities about what ending the academic year early, and not writing their end-of-year exams, will mean for them starting their next year of study in 2017?

Let us know your thoughts on the following questions if you or your children are studying at one of the country’s universities or hoping to do so in 2017:

• Has all the course work for the year – which must be examined before proceeding into the next year of study – been completed?
• Will students be able to write (and complete) their exams in January 2017, with the knowledge they have acquired thus far this year or will their knowledge pool be insufficient to complete the questions asked?

• If students are not equipped with all the knowledge they need to proceed to the next phase of study, will 2016’s first years still be first years in 2017?
• How will this affect 2016’s matriculants if there are no places at South African universities for them due to this year’s intake filling all those spaces in 2017?
• If universities close before the end of the academic year how will an inability to complete their degrees affect those who are in their final year but will not be able to seek jobs in January due to a lack of a degree?
• Do you have plans for next year – travel, a job offer etc – which may have to be put on hold or cancelled if you cannot finish your studies this year?
