Ekurhuleni women unite for Women’s Month

Women encouraged to never lose sense of self-pride.

The City of Ekurhuleni joined in the festivities of Women’s Month by acknowledging and appreciating work done by women in what is perceived to be male dominated fields.

To kick-start the celebrations, women in KwaThema converged at the KwaThema Community Hall on Thursday, last week, to commemorate the life of Margaret Gazo, an anti-apartheid activist, to reflect on her contribution to fight unjust laws during the apartheid era.

Women in the Ekurhuleni’s Transport and Planning Department took some time out on Friday, last week, to celebrate their work challenges and successes.

Women bus drivers, administrators and tellers at the City’s licensing division spent the day sharing tips and empowering each other on financial management, health, fashion and skills development.

The Women in Waste Awards ceremony took place on Saturday, last week, to recognise women in Waste Management Services as a token of appreciation for the tedious work they do daily.

Speaking at the prestigious Women in Waste Awards, head of Women’s Directorate in the mayor’s office, Lindiwe Khonjelwayo, encouraged women to never lose sense of self-pride and to always fight for the rights of gender equality.

“We women need to empower and encourage each other to always excel in all we do,” she said.

“It is every woman’s responsibility to up-skill herself through education.”
