Police find R500 000 worth of suspected stolen washing powder

The washing powder was allegedly stolen from a large consumer goods company.

Brakpan police arrested five men on Friday, last week, for being in possession of a mass quantity of suspected stolen washing powder.

The presumed stolen property, which included different brands of the cleaning agent, as well as roll-on deodorant, is valued at approximately R500 000.

Acting on information received, Brakpan Sector Police made their way to an address along Uranium Road, in Vulcania, at about 5.15pm, where the men were found loading boxes of washing powder into a white GWM bakkie.

The bakkie was found to contain hundreds of 2kg boxes of washing powder.

A storeroom on the property was searched and police found more washing powder, deodorant, empty boxes, rolls of plastic wrap, a scale and numerous glue guns.

The washing powder was allegedly stolen from a large consumer goods company.

Police seized three cellphones and the men, aged between 20 and 30, were detained at the Brakpan Police Station.

The bakkie was taken to the SAPS Van Ryn Deep Vehicle Pound in Benoni.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, told the Herald that the products were returned to the goods company.

“It was given back to the owner, with documents specifying that it must be kept until after the court case,” he added.
