Local IEC ready for polls

It’s all systems go for the upcoming local government elections in Ekurhuleni.

Over 20 representatives of political parties and independent candidates converged on Germiston on Thursday, last week, to sign the electoral code of conduct as a pledge to commit to a free and fair election.

The code of conduct calls on parties to practice political tolerance towards each other during the campaigning period until election day.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ekurhuleni’s municipal electoral officer, Dr Imogen Mashazi, tabled the electoral code of conduct and stated that Ekurhuleni’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) was ready to preside over free and fair elections on August 3.

“There are over one million registered voters on the ground,” she said.

“This is enough for all political parties to get their share of votes.

“There is, therefore, no need for violence, but parties must vigorously engage in peaceful campaigning.”

In terms of safety at polling stations, the IEC will ensure a visible police presence at all 626 voting stations.

Power generators are also on standby in case of power supply interruptions.
