Halfway there

The project hopes to stop the cycle of too many unwanted animals.

The Brakpan SPCA has reached the halfway mark in its Mass Sterilisation project which aims to sterilise 1 000 animals this year.

The 500th animal was sterilised at a Mass Sterilisation Day held on Sunday, last week, at The Doggy Palace, in Brakpan.

The project hopes to stop the cycle of too many unwanted animals.

According to the SPCA, one female cat and her offspring can produce 420 000 cats in seven years, and one female dog and her offspring can produce 67 000 dogs in six years.

The advantages of sterilising your pets include:

• prevents sexually transmitted diseases,

• animals can become disobedient, restless and noisy when in season,

• prevents uncastrated males in the neighbourhood from wandering,

• prevents fighting,

• animals are not always able to give birth naturally, which can lead to high veterinary bills or even death,

• prevents mammary tumours,

• animals are usually healthier.

The Brakpan SPCA can be contacted on 011 742 2007.
