Spreading winter safety awareness

Officials alerted the community on the safe use of paraffin stoves and lamps, candles and braziers.

The Ekurhuleni Department of Disaster and Emergency Management Services launched its Winter Safety Awareness campaign in March.

The target audience is mainly residents of informal settlements across Ekurhuleni.

The campaign is expected to end in August.

This past weekend saw the Public Information Education and Relations subsection of the department spreading awareness in the Zonkizizwe and Palm Ridge Extension Nine informal settlements.

Officials alerted the community on the safe use of paraffin stoves and lamps, candles and braziers.

They also discouraged residents from overloading electric plug sockets.

Communities were entertained by Maskandi groups portraying winter safety messages in their songs.

Residents were also educated about the Bucket Brigade System.

Community members are encouraged to have buckets (10l capacity) filled with water or sand in their homes at all times which will assist during fire incidents.

Buckets were issued to individuals who participated positively on the day.
