Two pupils from Brakpan High School recently scooped joint first place in a multilingual competition.
The Talethon – a quiz for Grade Nine pupils – was hosted by the Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging (ATKV) and the University of Johannesburg’s Department of Linguistics, to celebrate the richness of South Africa’s multilingualism.
The competition took place at the university’s Kingsway Campus.
The purpose of the Talethon is to familiarise pupils with more than one language (Afrikaans, isiZulu and Sesotho) and to help cultivate a love for South Africa’s languages.
Participating schools were each allowed two contestants and 36 pupils from schools around Johannesburg and Pretoria took part.
Brakpan High School pupils Ijeoma Iroka and Mpho Ramaesa were the remaining two contestants in Round 14 of the quiz.
After Round 20, the judges could still not establish an overall winner and the two were awarded joint first position.
Apart from their certificates and the invaluable experience, Ijeoma and Mpho also each received a substantial cash prize.
