A public holiday is an ideal day for monkeying around.
This proved more than true for Brakpan SPCA inspector Tamaryn Lombard, who was called out to Brenthurst on Monday, to catch a monkey.
The vervet monkey was spotted along Mitchel Street, and while Lombard was able to pet it, the monkey would try to bite her when when she attempted to hold it.
Lombard then contacted Cora Bailey from Claw (Community Led Animal Welfare) who was more then willing to assist.
After about six hours of following the monkey from house to house and setting a trap, the monkey was finally caught with the help of two volunteers from Claw.
The monkey was transported to a rehabilitation centre, where it will be released back into its natural environment.
The Brakpan SPCA thanked Bailey and the volunteers from Claw, who travelled from Roodepoort to help, as well as the Brakpan residents who assisted on the day.
The society does not condone owning any wild animal as a pet and reminded residents that it is illegal to own an indigenous animal without a permit.
