EMPD officer escapes hail of bullets
The boot of the vehicle suddenly opened.
An EMPD Intervention Unit member was lucky to escape unscathed after a man armed with a rifle opened fire on him.
According to Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, the officer had stopped a suspicious-looking white Toyota Corolla with three male occupants in Tsakane, on Monday.
“As the officer was requesting the driver to produce a driver’s licence, the boot of the vehicle suddenly opened and a person pointed what looked like an AK-47 and started shooting,” said Kgasago.
“The officer bolted to escape death.”
The incident took place along Cornwell Street, in Langaville Extension Five.
The attacked officer ran to save his life leaving behind his idling BMW patrol vehicle.
The assailants drove away with the BMW patrol vehicle which they abandoned a kilometre away along Vlakfontein Road.
“The SAPS K9 Unit and a chopper arrived five minutes after the shooting and the area was searched, but the perpetrators could not be located,” said Kgasago.
“The hunt is continuing to apprehend those responsible for the crime.”
