Brakpan top cop injured in shoot-out with robbers

The suspected robbers were cornered along the N17 highway.

Updated, April 6, 9am:

The search for the fourth armed robbery suspect continued well into the early hours of Tuesday evening, but he evaded arrest.

Roos’s injury did not require medical treatment and he and the team were back at work today (Wednesday).

April 5:

A gunshot wound to the hand did little to deter a dedicated Brakpan police officer from tracking down and arresting two armed robbery suspects.

WO Jan Roos, from the Brakpan Anti-Hijacking Task Team, was shot in the hand while in pursuit of a gang of four armed robbers following a robbery at a Mr Price store in Boksburg earlier today (Tuesday).

Reports indicate he was shot in the arm, but this is not true.

According to information received, Roos and a collegue, Const Jacques Viviers, spotted the robbers’ vehicle while on patrol this afternoon.

They gave chase and the suspected robbers were cornered along the N17 highway.

The men opened fire on the officers and a shoot-out ensued, during which Roos was shot in the left hand.

The officers managed to get the suspect’s vehicle off the road and the robbers fled into the surrounding area.

Roos and Viviers followed and arrested two of the men.

A police chopper and the K9 unit were called to the scene to help with the search, and a third man was later arrested.

The hunt for the fourth man is still underway.

More information to follow.
