Man arrested, stolen goods recovered

Stock to the value of R20 000 was stolen from a shop in Porter Avenue.

A 29-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning, last week, when he was found in possession of stolen goods.

The man was apparently one of three culprits who gained entry through the roof of a shop in Porter Avenue.

The roof and ceiling of the shop were damaged, and the business owner claimed that stock to the value of R20 000 was taken.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieut Col Wilfred Kgasago, members of the EMPD Tracing Unit responded to the burglary.

“Using the information received from reliable sources, the metro police were able to make one arrest and recovered a fraction of the stolen items,” said Kgasago.

“A man staying in the same street where the burgled shop is situated, was pounced upon by metro police officers and a DVD player and numerous boxes of cigarettes, allegedly stolen from the shop, were found wrapped in a huge blanket,” said Kgasago.

According to Kgasago, the suspect confessed that he was with three accomplices when committing the crime and indicated that they stay in Tsakane.

Items stolen from the shop, according to the owner, included large quantities of cigarettes, cosmetics, groceries and a CCTV system.

The police are still looking for the trio, who are still at large.

The suspect was charged at the Brakpan Police Station with possession of suspected stolen property and appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
