Ekurhuleni assists those hit hard by hailstorm

The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services is offering assistance to residents who were hit hard by the severe hailstorm which passed through the City on Monday.

A number of initiatives are taking place including the fixing of rooftops, which were blown off, and removal of fallen trees.

Furthermore, the City has enlisted the services of the Red Cross to boost relief efforts.

Members of the Community Emergency Response Team are also patrolling their respective areas to identify households that were affected.

In Etwatwa approximately 1000 homes, which were dented by hail, have been assessed and the roof of Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton was reported to have been damaged. Isolated areas of Brakpan, especially in the industrial areas, are known to have been affected.

In Katlehong, a number of homes were reported to have had their roofs blown off and windows shattered. There are only a few cases reported in the Thokoza and Palm Ridge areas, however, in Vosloorus many homes were badly damaged.

Officials are visiting communities where food parcels and blankets are being distributed to those in need.
