Pensioner robbed by bogus Ekurhuleni workers

Four robbers claiming to be Ekurhuleni meter readers tied up a pensioner (67) in her Strange Avenue home on Tuesday before making off with cash, jewellery, a camera and the woman’s vehicle.

A domestic worker and two other workers were also in the house during the incident.

At about 11am the pensioner was walking around the garden when four men wearing white t-shirts with the Ekurhuleni emblem, approached her claiming to be meter readers from Ekurhuleni. The men said that they needed to check the meter on the outside of the house and the pensioner granted them permission to do so.

As they were busy checking the meter, one of the men asked for a glass of water. The woman asked her domestic worker to bring them cold drink. After they received the cold drink, they requested to look at the plugs inside the house.

The woman, who was already inside the house and standing in the dining room, was then confronted by two of the men who produced firearms.

They pointed the firearms at her and instructed her to lie down and keep quiet, otherwise they would kill her.

They then tied her hands and left her alone to go and find the other victims.

The woman succeeded in untying herself and ran to get help from the neighbours.

The suspects then sped away with the victim’s vehicle and their loot.

“People should always ask for identification first or ask for a supervisor’s number, before permission can be given to gain entry or work on the premises,” said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan police station commander.

“Never assume that they’re legitimate because they’re wearing overalls or clothes with certain emblems on it,” concluded Joubert.

Suspicious activities and people can be reported to the Brakpan SAPS on 011 744 4940.
