Car chase nets four armed business robbers

Four suspects (between the ages of 30 and 43) were arrested on Monday, after a shop owner was robbed of cellphones and cash.

Six men, two of whom were carrying firearms, entered the shop at the corner of Prince George Avenue and Kitzinger Street on Monday.

They held up the owner (53) and took cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene in a white Quantum minibus, without number plates.

A member of the Brakpan Radio Group saw the Quantum driving in a reckless and negligent manner and also bumping into other vehicles.

The member gave chase and the Quantum drove along Athlone Avenue, in Dalview, in the direction of the R23 highway.

More members if the radio group, members of the EMPD, members of the Benoni SAPS and the Airwing, as well as the Brakpan Anti Hijacking Task Team, started to chase the suspects.

On the corner of Koot Avenue and the R23, the Quantum came to a standstill; the suspects got out of the vehicle and fled into the veld on foot.

Four of the men were caught and arrested. The stolen items were recovered and the police also seized a firearm.

After further investigation it was discovered that the minibus was stolen from its owner in the Johannesburg CBD.

The suspects are also linked to five other robberies in Brakpan, and the possibility is not excluded that they could be linked to more cases.

“We want to thank the entire above-mentioned role players, who assisted during the arrest of the dangerous, armed suspects,” said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander.

The suspects will appear in the Brakpan Magistrates Court soon, on charges of armed robbery, reckless and negligent driving and for being in possession of a stolen vehicle and an unlicensed firearm.

The Brakpan SAPS are investigating.
