According to Eastern Gauteng Aquatics (EGA), there are many factors for parents to consider before enrolling their children into a swimming school.
In a country like South Africa, where most homes have a swimming pool and where children are more exposed to water sources, the safety of children in and around pools, dams, rivers and the sea is of paramount importance.
Educating your child on water awareness, water safety and the acquisition of swimming skills is not a matter of choice, but of necessity.
It is a life skill that must be achieved by everyone.
Therefore, the following factors (as provided by EGA) should be considered before enrolling your child into a swimming school:
- Visit the prospective school before enrolling your child.
- The teachers at the swimming school or centre must be qualified through and registered with Swimming South Africa (SSA), the national aquatics body.
- If certificates are not visually displayed you are entitled to ask to see them. The following qualifications are recognised by SSA:
A SSA Learn to Swim instructor’s certificate (the entry level qualification) to teach children three years old and older.
A SSA Todswim Certificate for teaching babies aged between one and three years old.
