Man faces charges after lying to police about assault and hijacking

A 51-year-old man was arrested for perjury on Thursday after he made a false statement that he was hijacked at gunpoint.

On September 15, the man opened a case of hijacking at the Brakpan SAPS.

He claimed that he was waiting at a traffic light, at the corner of Van Der Walt Road and Gloucester Avenue, Dalview, when suddenly he felt a gun against his throat and a voice that told him that he should open his doors.

He further stated that a second man then jumped into the passenger’s seat and hit him in the face with a gun.

The man claimed he passed out from the heavy blow and woke up in front of a school.

“Upon further investigation it became clear that the offender wanted to claim from his insurance, because he was going through financial problems,” said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander.

The man was arrested on October 15 for perjury, after it was found that the information given was false.

He appeared in the Brakpan Magistrates Court the next day.

Joubert warned that perjury, which is the wilful act of swearing a false oath, is a serious offence and that offenders will have a permanent criminal record.

A person who makes a false statement can be fined, sentenced to jail or even both if proven to be guilty.

“There’s a good chance of getting caught, because we work with insurance companies on a daily basis,” said Joubert.
