Manager of the Brakpan SPCA, Ming Church, gave the following advice:
- Long haired dogs’ hair should be cut shorter to allow their skin to breathe in the heat.
- Dogs should be dipped once a week for ticks and fleas especially during the summer and rainy months. When you bath your dog, rinse well then leave the dog to dry naturally as this also helps to cool them down.
- Very short haired dogs can also get sunburnt, baby suntan lotion can be applied to their tummies, nose and any exposed areas to prevent sunburn, the eye area should be avoided.
- Fill buddy bottles with water and freeze – once frozen put them into your dog’s bowl of water to keep the water colder for longer.
The NSPCA has also warned that confined animals are at risk of being affected by the high temperatures.
The organisation advises:
- Companion animals should not be taken out in vehicles, except for emergency situations such as visits to the veterinarian.
- Pet owners should ideally refrain from walking or exercising their dogs in the heat of the day. It is better to wait until temperatures drop towards the end of the day as the heat retained in tarred roads or hot pavements can damage their paws.
- Do not keep your animals confined.
- Ensure your animals have lots of water and can access shade if you are away.
- Working animals like security dogs should be monitored carefully to avoid dehydration, fatigue or heatstroke.
