Cat stuck in tree for six days

The Brakpan SPCA rescued a cat from a tree on Wednesday, last week, after the animal was stuck for six days approximately nine meters above the ground.

The SPCA reportedly received a frantic call from a resident on Monday last week, stating that a cat had been stuck in a tree since August 20.

Inspectors Colette Barnard and Tamaryn Lombard went to assess the situation and attempted to lure the cat down.

Despite numerous attempts, the cat would not budge.

Due to the height and the fact that the tree was not easy to climb, an alternative plan had to be made.

Ann Martin, SPCA PRO and fundraiser, organised a cherry picker, a hydraulic crane with a railed or enclosed platform, from the Ekurhuleni electrical workshop but it was not available immediately and the team had no choice but to wait.

A team was put together on Wednesday, last week, and at about 10.30am the rescue operation was put into motion.

At 11.03am the rescue was completed and the cat was brought down safely and happily tucked into some food, blissfully unaware of all the drama he had caused.

“We have aptly called the cat Vasco (Da Gama) as he sailed the seven trees over a couple of days” said Ming Church, manager of the Brakpan SPCA.

Vasco will be up for adoption on Friday unless his owners come forward to claim him.

Victor Mashaba, kennel assistant at the Brakpan SPCA, with Vasco, who will be up for adoption as from Friday.
