Customers threatened during business robbery

Five armed robbers got away with an undisclosed amount of cash, after robbing a supermarket in Brenthurst.

The 41-year-old supervisor of Pick n Save, who asked not to be named, said that he was sitting at the entrance, observing everything at about 6.15pm, when a customer approached him and they started talking.

“While we were still talking, a man came into the store and grabbed the customer and showed us the firearm that was on his waist,” said the supervisor.

“At that moment another robber appeared and started waving a gun around at everybody, and then three more robbers appeared.”

“The robber, who was standing by the customer and me, led us to the kitchen and ordered us to lie down on the ground and not to move.”

“I heard a lot of noise coming from the other side. Luckily I didn’t hear any shots that were fired.”

The robber who led them to the kitchen, where other employees were also ordered to lie down, stood guard for a while, and then went to the other robbers.

“I heard them (the robbers) talking to an employee. I couldn’t understand everything they said, because they were talking in Zulu,” said the supervisor.

“After a while there was dead silence; I crawled out of the kitchen to check where the robbers were and noticed that they had left.”

The supervisor noticed that money had been stolen from the four tills and from the lottery machine.

“The incident left the customers and the employees traumatised, but I’m happy that nobody got hurt during the ordeal,” he said.

“It could’ve ended very differently.”
