Disadvantaged learners receive free lessons

Carnival City has pledged three more years of funding support towards enhancing maths, science and English education amongst Grade 10 to 12 learners, from underprivileged communities in Ekurhuleni.

The company has helped to sponsor the Sci-Com Foundation, which provides extra lessons and holiday learning programmes in these subjects, for the past three years.

“We are delighted to extend our sponsorship for a further three years. The programme has had a positive impact on the maths, science and English marks of participants, with many disadvantaged learners achieving distinctions and obtaining university exemption,” said Michelle Smith, marketing manager of Carnival City.

The poor level of maths and science education in South African schools, particularly in underprivileged communities, means that learners are not adequately prepared or able to enter tertiary education in the fields of maths and science.

The Sci-Com Foundation was established in 2010 to address this challenge.

Sci-Com offers extra classes to learners from Tsakane, Duduza, Nigel, Kwathema, Geluksdal, Vosloorus, Katlehong and Spruitview.

Saturday classes and extra lessons during the holidays serve to complement the school curriculum and improve learners’ comprehension of maths and science concepts.

Classes are offered free of charge at Brakpan High School.
