No mercy for traffic offenders

The EMPD will be out in full force to deal harshly with traffic offenders this Easter weekend.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said the EMPD will pull out all the stops to come down heavily on offenders as they joined hands with various stakeholders to launch the Easter Road Safety Campaign.

The campaign’s prrimary aim is to sensitise road-users by way of distributing educational pamphlets.

“Together we can remain safe on the roads,” said Kgasago.

He said the EMPD, SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Police, GCIS and various NGOs recently descended on the R21, at the Engen-1-Stop, to distribute pamphlets intended to educate motorists and pedestrians on how they can assist law enforcers in contributing to an accident-free, drug-free and violence-free Easter weekend.

“During the Easter weekend of last year, Ekurhuleni experienced two fatalities, as well as dozens of accidents in which several persons sustained serious injuries,” he added.

“One person killed on our roads is one life too many.

“Let us all come on board in ensuring that families enjoy the Easter weekend without contending with the negative effects of trauma, loss of life, loss of limb or costs incurred by government due to avoidable accidents and the uncalled-for irresponsible conduct on our roads.

“The objectives of the United Nations Decade of Action are to stabilise and reduce the level of road traffic fatalities around the world by 2020 – let us be part of that global initiative by bringing in our part.”

Kgasago said that, although the EMPD rolling (all year round) enforcement plan is observed, the intention is to greatly step-up visibility and enforcement during this Easter weekend, in order to ensure that those who fail to abide by the rules of the road don’t do it with impunity.

“Let it be second nature to us, as road-users, to respect the traffic laws by ensuring that our vehicles are fit to be on the road, pedestrians don’t drink and walk and drivers observe the rules of the road to the letter,” was his appeal.

These intensified operations will continue throughout the Easter weekend, until the schools reopen.
