House break-in syndicate busted in Brakpan

Seven men, believed to be part of a housebreaking syndicate, have been arrested by the Brakpan Anti-Hijacking Task Team.

The suspects, all of whom live in Brakpan, are believed to have been responsible for a spate of thefts in Brakpan and the surrounding areas, including a break-in at the SAPS Sportsgrounds in Apex, and another at the Brakpan Cemetery.

According to information received from Brakpan police, the suspects stole an estimated R650 000 worth of property, favouring items such as commercial lawnmowers, jet skis, quad bikes and trailers.

The stolen goods were then allegedly pawned at shops in Boksburg and Springs, under the suspects’ own names and ID numbers.

Information led the task team to an address along Cole Crescent, Brakpan North, on Thursday evening, last week, where five of the suspects were found.

The men, aged 22, 23, 30, 32 and 54, were taken to the Brakpan Police Station and later arrested.

They can be linked to several cases in Brakpan, Springs, Primrose and Boksburg.

Two other suspects — brothers aged 38 and 40 — were nabbed on Monday, and the task team recovered a stolen trailer and two quad bikes from an address along Gardiner Avenue.

Police have not ruled out further arrests and the investigation continues.
