“After a holiday we often get back and forget to keep our guard up, giving criminals the advantage. Your best defence against a hijacking is being alert and aware of your surroundings while driving,” he said.
“Remember the ‘2 km strategy’ when approaching and entering your driveway: be extra alert. “Switch off the car radio and concentrate on your surroundings. Look out for any suspicious vehicles that may be following you. Check your driveway and street before you leave or enter the premises. Remember to stop your vehicle just inside the gate and select reverse gear while waiting for the gate to close behind you.”
Mc Master added that motorists should ensure their driveway is well lit and clear of shrubbery.
“If you spot any suspicious pedestrians close to your driveway, drive past and rather circle back,” he said.
Hijackings, however, do not only take place when entering or exiting your property, so Mc Master offers the following additional safety tips:
* If approached by a stranger while in your vehicle, drive off if possible, or use your hooter to attract attention.
* Lock your doors, close your windows and do not have bags or briefcases visible in the vehicle while driving.
* Be constantly on the lookout for suspicious characters or vehicles and do not hesitate to report them to the SAPS.
* Do not take anything from people standing at traffic lights or intersections. Perpetrators are often standing among these people.
* If you suspect you are being followed, drive to the nearest Police Station or any busy public area.
“Speak to your mechanic about tracking units and hijacking prevention products on the market. However, at the end of the day, your life is more valuable than your vehicle so don’t take chances if you find yourself in a hijacking situation,” added Mc Master.
